UK: Badass Women’s Hour, the talkRADIO show and podcast, has won the Diversity in Media Awards’ (DiMA) Radio Programme of the Year. The show only launched in January and is hosted by Harriet Minter, Natalie Campbell and Emma Sexton. It saw off competition which included Woman’s Hour, LBC and Resonance FM.
The DIMAs celebrate media which goes out of its way to produce diverse and challenging content. The awards are voted for by the public with Badass Women’s Hour gathering the most votes in the Radio Programme of the Year despite having been going for less than ten months.
Badass Women’s Hour is hosted by former Guardian journalist Harriet Minter and entrepreneurs Natalie Campbell and Emma Sexton. The show started as a monthly live event at the W Hotel in 2016. After recording the event a few times and putting it out as a podcast the three women pitched the idea to talkRADIO as a show. Despite having no previous radio experience, Minter, Campbell and Sexton convinced the station to give them a chance and the show has blossomed. Guests have included: vlogger Grace Victory, campaigner Nimco Ali and boxer Cathy Brown.
Speaking about the award Minter said:
– We’re so delighted to have won and very grateful to everyone who voted for us. Just 4% of radio shows with more than one host feature groups of women, this simply isn’t good enough and we’re proud to be part of changing that.
The programme aims to show the real conversations women have: from work to relationships to politics and money. We don’t believe in holding back and strongly believe in using our show to highlight the diversity of brilliant women in the UK today.
